Our Visitors

A lovely letter and drawing from one of our younger visitors!

RUTLAND MORRIS MEN

The Visit of the Rutland Morris Men proved a great success.
They entertained our customers with traditional singing and dancing
and even persuaded some of the audience to join in!!

Little Kicks – 2 men and their Guitars
A Song about The Lord Nelson and its Staff!

Singer Songwriters “Little Kicks”- two lads from Northern Ireland via Liverpool stayed in a friend’s cottage in the village to provide them with a clam and quiet environment to compose new material.
Obviously they needed a little help to get the creative juices flowing-so repaired to the local hostelry-The Lord Nelson! It didn’t take much to persuade them to produce their guitars and have an impromptu jam session-much to the delights of the other customers. So much so –they were back virtually every night of their stay-and even composed a little ditty about The Pub

Well we’ve learnt a lot about Nelson
Since we’ve been here
We’ve had his Blood and his Nips
We drank his Beer

Chorus:
The Bar Staff are very friendly
We’ve not really sucking up
But there’s an empty pint beside me
So please fill it up!

We sank our pints like Nelson sank
Those Ships abroad
If there was a free meal tomorrow
T’would be Salmon, not Cod

Chorus:
The Bar Staff are very friendly
We’ve not really sucking up
But there’s an empty pint beside me
So please fill it up!

Well we’ve sang about Carrots and temperamental soil,
To Lord Nelson’s Bar in Burnham Thorpe
We will b e loyal

Chorus:
The Bar Staff are very friendly
We’ve not really sucking up
But there’s an empty pint beside me
So please fill it up!

Now I’ll tell you ‘bout me Nan
She’s short on pound and pences
What she really really needs - Is some willow woven fences!
So if there’s some crafty willow weaver that hangs around this town
We’ll bring him back to Ireland
Where he’ll surely make a pound

Chorus:
The Bar Staff are very friendly
We’ve not really sucking up
But there’s an empty pint beside me
So please fill it up!

LORD MAYOR OF LONDON'S VISIT

The Lord Major of London, Alderman Michael Savory, along with a party of 34 other invited guests from North Norfolk, including Henry Bellingham MP and the Mayor of King’s Lynn, had Sunday Lunch at the Lord Nelson on 6th November 2005.

Michael Savory very kindly bought ‘drinks all round’ in the bar, which proved a very popular move with the locals.
He also sampled Nelson’s Blood Bitter and had a shot of the Nelson’s Blood itself.

The visit followed a Church service at All Saints Burnham Thorpe and preceded The Lord Mayor’s visit to Norwich to promote the City and business. This was his last function of his year in office.

Michael Savory has many connections with Norfolk including his management of the Muckleborough Collection.

Whilst here, he also acted as ‘go-between’, bringing together Henry Bellingham,MP and Landlord, David Thorley.
Henry’s ancestor was the assassin who shot and killed David’s Great, Great grandfather, Prime Minister, Spencer Percival,
The assassination took place in 1813 in the House of Commons and is famed for being the only British Prime Minister to be assassinated.
Henry and David had a reconciliatory drink…a picture which then appeared in the local and national press!!

MORE FILMING AT THE NELSON
The Lord Nelson was taken was taken over by Capriol Films as the set for part of a film they are making on the life of the British composer Peter Warlock. Set in the late 1920’s (Warlock commited suicide at a young age in 1930), he was part of The Bloomsbury set of Artists and Composers, including people such as Augustus John who led a bohemian lifestyle in the pubs and clubs of London and England. The Nelson is being used as the set for The Albatross pub in London, which is currently being refurbished so unavailable for use on the film. The finished film will be shown in 2006 on Channel 4 or The Arts Channel on Sky.
