About our Famous Pub

The Lord Nelson is situated in Nelson’s Birthplace, Burnham Thorpe.
(Nelson was born in The Parsonage in 1758, son of the Vicar Edmund Nelson.)
Built in 1637 as an Ale House, The Lord Nelson was called The Plough until 1798 when its name was changed to The Lord Nelson, the first pub in England to do so, in honour of his victory over the French at The Battle of the Nile.

Visit the pub today and you can soak up the atmosphere that has changed little over the past 360 years.
The pub has no bar and your drinks are served from a tap room with a range of real ales served straight from the cask.
When Nelson was without a command from November 1786 to February 1793, he returned to Burnham Thorpe with his new wife, Fanny, and stepson to stay with his father in the Parsonage.
During this period, he spent many hours in the pub which, no doubt, helped him compose his letters of protest to the Admiralty at his lack of a ship.
You can even sit on the same high backed settle where Nelson used to sit!

War against France was declared in 1793 and Nelson celebrated being given the command of the Agamemnon by entertaining the whole village to a final meal upstairs at The Lord Nelson…. that is the entire village except one young man who was considered too young to be included.
When the party left at the end of the meal, some of them teased the young man and he reacted by fighting with them.
Nelson commented that he was a most valiant young fellow, so his parents had him rechristened Valiant in All Saints Church!!

Nelson had requested that, when he died, he should not be buried at sea as would have been the norm, but in Burnham Thorpe or, should The King so decide, in St Paul’s Cathedral (where he is buried in the Crypt).
To bring his body back from Trafalgar, it was put in a barrel and covered in rum.
However, after a few days the barrel was found to be almost empty as the sailors had been taking a nip of 'Nelson’s Blood' to bring them luck!
The barrel was then topped up with brandy and spirits and brought back to Greenwich where it was transferred to a coffin for its final journey to St Paul’s.

Made from a secret blend of 100 proof Navy rum and spices, 'Nelson’s Blood' or 'Lady Hamilton’s Nip' are unique to The Lord Nelson so you can take a nip of and toast
The Immortal Memory of England’s greatest naval hero!
