THE GARNER STORY

Vicki's Information so far

The Publican of the Lord Nelson Inn in Burnham Thorpe covering the 1851, 1861and 1871 Census was John Garner.
John Garner was born 1805c at Ashill in Norfolk. His wife Leah (surname not known at this time) was born 1807c at nearby Matlask.

In 1851 John and his family were living at the Nelson Inn in Burnham Thorpe where he was an Innkeeper & Wheelwright employing 3 men.
There were four children living with the family in 1851-
Caroline aged 17 (b 1834)and a Dressmaker
Leah aged 15 (b 1836) and an Assistant in the House
James Brett aged 8 (b 1843) and
Eliza aged 6 (b 1845) - all born at Burnham Thorpe.
There was an older sister Ann christened on 9Aug1829 at Burnham Overy - according to the IGI - International Genealogical Index from the LDS Church.
Details of younger sister Mary Bette (b 1838c) not known in 1851.

In 1861, John is still the Innkeeper at the Lord Nelson Inn. Living with him are his wife Leah, now aged 58 and daugher Mary Bette, now aged 23.
Son James Brett, is aged 18 and a Wheelwright's Assistant. Young Eliza is a dressmaker, aged 16 years.
Daughter Ann married Thomas Shefferson Payne in the Dec Qtr of 1852 (ref 4b 867) - so by 1861 they have four children and a servant Emily Clarke living
with them at 2 St James St, Kings Lynn. Thomas is a Corn Merchant. The children are Esther Jane, John Thomas, Samuel Brett and Harriett Augusta.
Meanwhile daughters Leah and Caroline have married - Leah to Robert Witton in the Jun Qtr of 1853 and Caroline to William Witton around 1859.
Over the five censuses - 1861 1871 1881 1891 and 1901 - the spelling of the surname for Robert and William vary between Witton, Witten, Wilton, Wilson,
Weston and Wetton! I believe these men to be related but have not been able to establish the relationship at this stage.
William was born in 1830 at Burnham Market, while Robert was born 1831 in Burnham Sutton.
Caroline and William are living at Barnham Overy with their two children Caroline A and Florence E. William is a Plumber and Glazier and is denoted as
Deaf.
Leah and Robert are living at Back St, Burnham Westgate with their four children, John R, Esther A, Mary A, and Thomas W. Robert is a Wheelwright.

In 1871 John Garner is still the Publican at the Lord Nelson Inn (now aged 66) with his wife Leah 68 and daughters Mary B 33 and Eliza 26.
No record can be found of son James Brett Garner in 1871- he was possibly serving overseas during this time.
On 25Apr1874, James had married Louisa Jane Lunn in the St John Pater Parish Church at Pembroke in Wales. James was a bachelor of full age and
Louisa was a Spinster of full age. His father was John Garner, Hotel Keeper, while Louisa's father was James Lunn, a butcher.
James was a Private in Att. Regt and they were both resident in the Pembroke Dock. Witnesses were Charles Lunn and Dorothy Ann Bowden Fletcher.
The minister was George Edwd Machughilles and banns were publicly read. Both bride and groom signed their names.
Louisa Lunn already had two sons Albert Seaton b 3Mar1872 at Streatham in London and Charles Henry Thomas b 17Feb1874 in Pembroke, Wales.
The Marriage of Louisa and James Brett Garner took place only two months after Louisa's son Charles was born, also at Pembroke!
Charles' birth certificate states his father to be Charles Lunn and his mother is Louisa Lunn, nee Brown and that Charles is a private in the 1st 9th Regiment stationed in Pembroke, Wales.
**Louisa is designated SPINSTER - father's name JAMES LUNN, Butcher - these stated facts are open to conjecture!
No record of a marriage between Charles and Louisa found at this stage.

*Descendant Eric Lunn-Garner gave me copies of Lunn/Garner marriage & death certificates but there are many inconsistencies.
He states Louisa married three times - to Charles Lunn, then to James Brett Garner, then Alfred Thomas Piper - producing numerous children.
Eric states that 'Grandma Lunn had 22 children, 19 lived, with 18 serving in the Great War. The 19th, named Jack, was in the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in London (therefore he was manpowered), while the rest of the boys served in the Navy or Army. Even the girls served in the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Nursing Service'.
Louisa Lunn had been born about 1857, the daughter of Francis Snr and Eliza Lunn(nee Brown) in Dogmersfield, Hampshire. Louisa is aged 5 on the 1861Census. No birth record found at this stage. Searches of the 1871 Census have not produced details of Louisa Lunn - probably aged only 14 years.
Louisa was aged about 15 when she produced her first son Albert, and 42 when Dorothy was born in 1894! Fourteen children in twenty seven years!

Louisa is my husband's great grandmother and Albert Seaton was his grandfather.

There is a record of the death of Eliza Garner, the youngest daughter, in Mar 1874 at Docking Ref 4b 223 aged 29 years.
In 1871 Ann and Thomas' family has grown to include Alfred, Walter, Herbert, Clara and Ellen. Thomas is now a Corn and Coal Merchant. The family lives at
Queen St, Kings Lynn.
Caroline and William's family has also grown and now includes Julia B, Rosa M, Bertha b and another Caroline Augusta (firstborn Caroline must have died). The
family live at Burnham Westgate.
Leah and Robert have three more children - Emma, Albert and Ernest E and live at Kings Head Lane in Burnham Westgate.

By the time of the 1881 Census both parents, John and Leah Garner are deceased - John in June 1872, Leah in Dec 1876.
Ann and Thomas Payne are now retired and living at 37 Queen St, Kings Lynn - still eight of their children are still residing with them - Esther, Samuel B,
harriett A, Alfred, Walter, Herbert, Clara and Ellen.
Caroline and William are living at Market Place, Burnham Westgate and four of their children are still at home - Julia now 19 and a Pupil Teacher, Rosa,
Bertha and Caroline A known as Augusta, all scholars.
Widower Robert Wilson is still living in Back St, Burnham Westgate with seven of his children - John A, Mary Ann, Thomas, Emma, Albert, Ernest and Herbert, aged from 28 down to 9. Sadly Leah Witton died in the June Qtr 1873 aged only 38 years.
Mary Bette Garner is living at 59 Liquerpond St, Boston and earning a living as a Tea Dealer.
James 'Garnes' is the head of the house at 3 Langmead Sq in Lambeth, London. He is a gardener aged 38 years. Wife Louisa is aged 26, born Pilcott in Hampshire.
With them are three sons - Charles aged 7 (born Pembroke Dock), John aged 5 (born Streatham in Surrey) and baby William aged 8 months born in
Norwood, Surrey.
(Louisa's son Albert Seaton is living with grandparents Francis and Eliza Lunn in Dogmersfield in Hampshire, while daughter Leah aged only 3 years is with Louisa's sister Caroline and husband Alfred Harrod at 27 Garibaldi St, Great Grimsby in Lincoln.

By 1891 Ann Payne is a 61 year old widow living on her own means with three grown children, Esther, Clara and Alfred at 14 Chicken St, Kings Lynn.
Caroline is also a widow, now aged 57 years and her 29 year old daughter Julia, a School Mistress, lives with her, still in Burnham Westgate.
Robert Wilton (widow of Leah) now has a new wife, Mary, and their two young children Leah and Robert A, together with Emma, now 29, live together in
Burnham Westgate.
Mary Bette Garner is now Housekeeper for a Chemist named Charles J. Paline in High St, Saxmundham in Suffolk.
In the 1891 Census at 29 Havelock Place, St Mary Parish, Lambeth, Norwood lived the Garner Family -
James B, Head aged 48, born Burnham Thorpe, in Norfolk (b 1843c), a Jobbing/Gardener. Louisa, aged 36, born Dogmersfield, Hampshire.
Charles 17, Houseboy/Domestic Servant, born Pembroke in Wales, John 15, also a Houseboy/Domestic Servant, born Streatham and William 10, Scholar, born Norwood. All places and years of birth are the same as on the 1881 Census. Six more children were born to the couple since the 1881 Census -
Caroline 8, Rose 6, Mary Jane 5, Theodore 3, Edwin 2, and Reginald 1 - all born Norwood.
Louisa was left a widow with thirteen children when her husband James Garner died 11Apr1895 at 2 East St, West Norwood (street now called Orient St) -
informant was L. Garner, widow of deceased .

In 1901 Ann Payne is now aged 71 years and three of her grown children live with her - Esther 47, Alfred 38 and Clara 34. They live in Church St, Kings
Lynn.
Anne died in the June Qtr of 1910 aged 84 years (ref 4b 81)
Caroline Witton is now aged 67 and living on own means with daughters Julia 39, Caroline A 30 and a boarder at Burnham Westgate. No details of Caroline's
death found at this stage.
Also by 1901 Leah's replacement is now also a widow - Mary Wetton lives with daughter Leah now 18, Robert A 15, son in law Hubert Smith aged 28 and two
servants. They live at 2 Tavrahead St, Hertford.
Now aged 63 Mary B Garner is living in Norton St, Burnham Norton, on her own means.
In the 1901 Census, Louisa Garner is aged 44 years and head of the house at 24 Chapel Rd, Lambeth. Her occupation is Monthly Nurse and there are eight Garner
children aged from sixteen down to seven living with her. Children were Rose Helen b1885, Mary Jane b1886, Theodore b 1887, Edwin b 1889, Reginald Herbert b 1890, Christopher b 1891, Alice Maud b 1893 and Dorothy May b 1894.
No registration of the marriage of Louisa to Alfred Thomas Piper can be found at this stage.
But Louisa's daughter Rose b 1885 married Alfred Thomas Piper in 1908!
Louisa Piper died on 15Jan1914 aged 58 years at 48 Eden Rd in Lambeth. Informant was H.R. Garner, son (Herbert Reginald)
.

Information from our Local Historian

Since we first discussed the project at the Garden Club; when my first thought was Jesse Garner the Registrar in Station Rd (where the Browns live) I had further thoughts, remembering that I had come across the name in BT, tho' had'nt really registered with the 'Nelson' link. As the man's foremost work was as a wheelright. In the 1851 census John Garner is the head of household, married, aged 46, innkeeper and wheelright employing 3 men, born at Ashill. His wife Leah, aged 48 born Matlask. The children living at home were all born in BT, Caroline aged 17 a dressmaker, Leah aged 15 assisting with house, James aged 8 and Eliza 6 at school. Living close by (tho' not at the school house). Is Ann Garner, head of household, unmarried, aged 21, school mistress, born B. Sutton, (possibly the father was at the Lord Nelson or other, before going to BT)? also in the house is a sister Mary Betts Garner aged 13 at school born in BT.

In the BT parish registers, I found this marriage:-

19:Nov:1857 - William Witton of age, bachelor, of B.Overy plumber s/o William Witton, maltster. To Caroline Garner, of age, spinster of BT d/o John Garner, wheelright.

The first baptism in BT, is for Caroline 11th Jan.1834, then Leah 07th Feb.1836, Mary Betts 14th Jan.1838, John Garner s/o John and Leah, born 12th March, bapt.05th April.1840. James Brett Garner born11th Aug. bapt. 04th Sep. 1842. Eliza Garner born 17th Aug. bapt. 25th Aug.1844. (the earlier ones did'nt have the added birth date).

BT burials = 16th Aug.1844, John Garner aged 04 years.

20th Jun.1872, John Garner aged 68 years.

09th Jan.1874, Eliza Garner of BO.29 years.

02ndDec 1876, Leah Garner of BO, 74 yrs.

No others to end of book 1962.
