Meet 'The Nelson' Staff
Simon, Jo, Peter and Deborah
Maintaining
traditions without stifling innovation,
Simon and Jo Alper and Peter and Debbie De Groeve
look forward to meeting and serving regular,
occasional and new customers at The Lord Nelson.
We hope to see you in the bar, at Lord Nelson commemorative events,
Quiz and Music Nights, and for fine dining.
From
the home of Stella Artois and 5000 restaurants (a small exaggeration),
Peter De Groeve is responsible for starting three of the most famous and successful
eateries and has trained many of the top chef-proprietors now working in Leuven.
Coming to live in Norfolk with his English wife Debbie, who herself has Norfolk
origins
(the Eke family of Matishall near Dereham), Peter has chosen Burnham Thorpe
to develop a different eating experience with traditional food values.
His professionalism and attention to detail can only come from someone
who has built a whole career being a chef in one of the world’s most
discerning markets.
' Good food is about dishes with balance between flavours,'
he says, 'so that you can taste the quality of the ingredients.'
To
complement the food, Simon Alper provides his enthusiasm
and extensive knowledge of wines, beers and spirits to ensure an eclectic
mix of
traditional and off-the-wall liquid companions for the restaurant.
Simon has worked in vineyards and wine companies in
France, Germany and England, and judged at competitions in the U.K
for twenty years at the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition,
and also on occasion for Wine magazine’s International Wine Challenge
as a panel chairman.
“To a certain extent the simpler the dish, the better you can make a
successful marriage
with a wine or beer, but we should not get too serious.
Good wine and food should be great fun and we aim to provide that”,
says Simon.
Jo’s enthusiasm for trips to Norfolk as breaks from lecturing at Anglia
Ruskin University
in Cambridge led to a holiday house, now their permanent residence, in the
area.
